On September 26—the Feast of the Consecration of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Jerusalem—the first Orthodox service took place in the city of Baguio on the island of Luzon (Philippines).
Hieromonk John (Gondayao), rector of the Parish of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God in Manila, celebrated the Divine Liturgy.
Local residents and expatriates living in the city and the surrounding area attended the service.
“We hope this marks the beginning of a new community in the north of the Philippines’ largest island,” Father John noted.
Following the Liturgy, a blessing of vehicles took place. Afterward, a communal meal was held, giving those present the opportunity to speak with the priest about topics of interest.
Baguio is known as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines.” As the largest city in northern Luzon, it is situated high in the mountains; this location ensures comfortable temperatures during the hot months of March, April, and May (the Philippine summer), attracting many tourists who come to admire the beautiful mountain scenery.
